The project

On a balcony in Trévoux, a Redcinha Reverse 200 co-extruded composite decking optimizes space and offers a durable, warm wood appearance.

Project Context

Located in Trévoux, on the banks of the Saône, this project involves the development of a balcony in an apartment within a private residence. The client, a private individual in Trévoux, aimed to transform the outdoor space into a comfortable, lasting living area with a strong wood aesthetic and minimal maintenance. The unobstructed views of the water and the presence of a black metal railing created a setting conducive to a refined decking that could harmonize with a light façade and contemporary outdoor furniture. The photos showcase a generous space furnished with low sofas, a dining table, and planted pots, where the composite decking boards structure the whole and enhance the visual continuity towards the landscape.

Solution Implemented

The choice fell on the Redcinha® Reverse 200 decking board, a co-extruded composite wood with a width of 200 mm, reversible with two complementary shades (recto Wengé, verso Caramel). The brushed wood relief surface ensures a natural, uniform appearance over long lengths. The useful specifications for layout and exploitation are as follows:

  • Board dimensions: 200 x 2900 x 25 mm
  • Linear expansion: 2 mm/m, facilitating the control of gaps and joints
  • UV treatment and rot-proof material, does not break when frozen
  • 10-year warranty
  • Maintenance recommended with a high-pressure cleaner at a minimum distance of 1 m The co-extruded nature of the envelope protects the composite core and stabilizes the color. The reversibility provides options for contrast or uniformity depending on the areas. The range is compatible with an all-inclusive pack per m² and recommended accessories for controlled installation: full composite joist 40x25, stainless steel starter clips, black PE joining clips, screws and dowels, aluminum angle, composite finishing skirting, adjustable supports (from 10 to 220 mm as needed), geotextile, and integrated LED spots. This palette allows adjusting the implementation to the usual constraints of a balcony, especially the low clearance and the need for invisible fixings.

Realization and Result

The project photograph highlights a parallel board installation to the façade, with regular alignment and invisible fixings for a continuous surface. The joints are calibrated, and the 200 mm grid enhances the perspective towards the railing, opening the view to the Saône. The warm wood tone, derived from the Caramel/Wengé reversibility, was uniformly chosen for the visible deck area, which enhances sun exposure and dialogues with the black metal of the railing and the light stone of the façade. The edges at the sliding threshold appear neat, with clean cuts and controlled peripheral gaps. The overall setup offers a fluid circulation plan for relaxation furniture and the dining table, while the planted pots punctuate the periphery without disrupting the decking's ventilation. On a balcony, the compatibility with low-height supports and a lightweight structure is an asset; the low expansion 2 mm/m simplifies the fixation spacing and the management of joints. The final finish is uniform, without visible fixings, and maintenance is limited to periodic washing, with the constraint of maintaining a minimum distance of 1 m between the cleaner nozzle and the surface. The project demonstrates the relevance of a large format 200 mm board to smooth the visual grid and reduce the number of lines, while preserving the brushed wood texture. The visuals may include modifications to preserve the confidentiality of certain elements.
